The People Around You Will Make, or Break, the Organization
Every year, like clockwork, it starts.
Parents begin asking who’s coming back and who isn’t. Conversations turn into speculation, and speculation turns into rumors. Whether intentional or not, those rumors spread, and historically, they’ve hurt organizations like ours.
This year was different.
Yes, there were still rumors. There always will be. But despite that, we nearly doubled our registrations in the first month compared to the 2025 season.
That doesn’t happen by accident.
I believe it comes down to one thing: the people inside the organization.
Now, we’re not perfect, far from it. But we are transparent, committed, and grounded in a set of values that we actually follow. And that matters more than perfection ever will.
In any organization, especially one that operates like a business, transparency and integrity are non-negotiable. They are the foundation of trust, and trust is what fuels growth.
But that kind of culture doesn’t just happen.
It starts at the top.
The executive board must be aligned, not just in title, but in purpose. Everyone has to understand the mission and the goal. More importantly, they have to communicate it the same way.
The same message. The same standards. The same truth.
Not opinions.
Not emotions.
Not gossip.
The truth.
When your leadership team; President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, General Manager, Athletic Director, Cheer Director, and others, is fully aligned, something powerful happens. That alignment carries down to the rest of the organization.
Coaches, team managers, and volunteers begin to believe in the mission. And when they believe in it, they can clearly and confidently communicate expectations to the families they serve.
That clarity eliminates confusion. It reduces “what ifs.” It sets a standard.
Of course, there will always be individuals who test boundaries, that’s part of working with people. But when your volunteers know that leadership will step in quickly, fairly, and consistently, it reinforces trust across the board.
No favoritism. No exceptions.
Because this isn’t a social club.
It’s a business.
And the way you operate, how firm, fair, consistent, and transparent you are, determines how your community responds. People may not always agree with decisions, but they will respect consistency and honesty.
And respect spreads.
Word of mouth travels faster than anything else. It can either build your organization or break it.
All it takes is one misaligned board member.
One coach saying the wrong thing.
One moment of inconsistency.
That’s how distrust begins.
But when your team is unified, disciplined, and committed to the same standard, you create something much stronger than a program.
You build a culture people believe in.
And that’s what drives real, sustainable growth.
